A new tennis champion

Serena Williams has just won a major tennis competition in London for the sixth time. She won the Wimbledon ladies’ competition in front of large crowd.

The event at Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and it is the only major competition where the tennis matches are played on grass. It takes place every summer for two weeks in June and July and it has some unusual traditions. The players can only wear traditional white tennis clothes and there are always strawberries and cream on sale for the spectators.

In the past the English climate was a problem at Wimbledon as it often rains in the summer. However, the main court now has a special roof which can be opened or closed depending on the weather.
