The dangers of shift work

Most people who work in shops, education or business usually work during the day. Typical working hours in Britain are between 9 am and 5 pm with a one hour break for lunch. However, some jobs such as health workers, factory workers or people who work in bars or restaurants have to work at night and this is called shift work. Some people always work a late or early shift. Other people work different hours, depending on a rota system.

A new survey has found that people who do shift work are generally less healthy than people who work regular hours. Scientists now say that it is fairly clear that shift work is unhealthy and that working irregular hours can cause obesity, back pain, diabetes or lung problems.
