An online art gallery
If you play computer games you’ll know that Minecraft is a video game. It was originally created in Sweden and it allows players to build 3D constructions made out of cubes.
The Tate Gallery in London is now working with the makers of Minecraft to make a virtual art gallery. When visitors arrive they will see a white cube, which represents the art gallery. Then they can walk up to a painting and literally jump into it and interact with the painting’s world. There will be no security guards keeping watch and visitors are invited to climb on the artworks and explore them.
It is hoped that these Minecraft creations will help new, younger audiences to become familiar with some famous paintings, so that when they see the originals in a gallery, it will be like “seeing an old friend”. The virtual art gallery will open its digital online doors on Monday.
