Tracey Emin’s famous bed

A famous piece of art by the English artist Tracey Emin has recently been sold at an auction for £2.2 million. It’s not a traditional painting or a sculpture, but a modern art installation, which is actually an unmade bed. The bed is arranged as if she has just got up and it has cigarette ends, empty bottles of alcohol, newspapers and dirty clothes scattered on the floor.

Her piece of bed art rapidly made her an over-night sensation and she appeared regularly on TV and in the newspapers. Some people loved her work and said it was innovative and daring. Other more traditional art fans hated it and said it was not art, just a bed.

Tracey Emin grew up in the English seaside town of Margate where her father owned a hotel. She moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art and she is still one of Britain’s best known modern artists.
