The Beatles in America

It was exactly 50 years ago, in 1964, that the English pop group The Beatles flew to America for the first time. As they arrived at New York, there were thousands of youngsters waiting to catch sight of them as they got off the plane. As the group went through customs, hundreds of fans were pushing against the barriers desperately trying to get close to their heros. One surprising fact is that 70% of the young fans were boys.

There were so many young fans that the police had to form a line to protect the band. A television reporter said that it was the most incredible welcome he had ever seen.

The American tour was a great success and two well-known Beatles songs immediately reached the Number 1 position in the American charts. The songs were ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and ‘She Loves You’.
