The election result is announced

The Scottish people have voted, the votes have been counted and the result has been announced. Scotland will not be becoming an independent country and the Scottish people have chosen to remain a part of the United Kingdom. Maps of the UK won’t need to be reprinted, the flag won’t need to be changed and you won’t need to show your passport if you fancy a holiday in the beautiful lakes and mountains of Scotland.

Not everybody is happy of course. Although 55% voted to remain in the UK, the 45% who wanted independence are bitterly disappointed. They saw this election as a chance to break free from English influence and to have complete control of their own economy. The UK government has promised to give more power to the Scottish Parliament, but the exact details of this are yet to be decided.
