Football: a new role for Wayne Rooney

Twenty-eight year old Wayne Rooney has been chosen as the new captain of the English football team.

He was born in Liverpool in 1985 and started playing professional football at the age of 16. He played his first international match aged 17 and was the youngest player ever to represent England. Before he became a footballer he was a boxer. He still enjoys boxing as a hobby and finds it a good way to reduce stress.

He joined Manchester United in 2004 and since then his team have won the Premier League five times. Rooney says that to be chosen as captain of England is beyond his wildest dreams.
