English – a changing language
The English language is constantly evolving and over time new words are created and some words become less popular. A new study by a leading UK company has reported that British people are now using an increasing number of American words and phrases. The word ‘awesome’ for example has been very common in American English, but now it is often heard in Britain. Some English words which have become less popular are cheerio, fortnight and marvellous.
The report suggests several different reasons why this is happening. New technologies such as Facebook and Twitter are one factor and the popularity of American sitcoms and Hollywood films may also be a cause.
